westy owners - can you help?

Post by ermie571 »

Ok folks,

bought this to replace the bed in my van....http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWNX:IT

Kind of believed german build quality would be good - it was that or the bluebird bed. But now some doubt that it is westy. Its come out of a RH drive van, so thought that previous owner had made the base to fit. Now it transpires that seller inherited the bed and kitchen unit he was also selling (looked v westy), and he was told it was westy.

I thought westy was metal framed. This bed has metal hinges but the bed is wooden boards. If that is the case is the bluebird metal framed one a better /safer bet? he says it has no base above the engine bay...is this right? The guy is being very genuine - he is going to do more photos tomorrow night, and can cancel the sale if it isn't westy, or not what I want. I thought a westy bed had a metal frame?

Any hints would be useful

Off to look at images now!

thanks Jed....looked at some google images t25 westy....and it looks very similar. - The little brown knob to lock it in sitting position does feature in some of the pictures I looked at. Does it have a metal frame? Or wooden boards that form the seat?

Putney.....stop the toast arguement!!! :rofl

westy vs bluebird ----- what do folks reckon? (before I go and spend dosh on the wrong thing)

Hi Em - doesn't look like the bed in my van. As in Jed the spread's pics, the bed is made up of the rear seats. ebay pics seem to look like just normal foam. there isn't a base over the engine bay, just the thick mattress. you are very welcome to come and have a look at mine if you are over in SE London. Hope you are all well,

Francine

Doesn't look like a westy one to me either, I've put a full width multivan one in my van and that was made up of 2 very sturdy metal end pieces with the rock and roll hinges attached, a big metal bar that runs between them on the top of the front piece, the front trim is just cosmetic and doesn't give any strength. The knob to release the seat should be in the middle not off to the side and the squab and back of the seat should be shaped foam on a 18mm ply base, just like in Jed's pics.Tthere should also be a couple of metal bracket/supports on the squab that rest on the metal front beam when the bed is down.
For £200 I'd walk away and look for a proper westy one, at best that one has westy hinges but homemade squab and back.

Pictures are crap, but it looks like it may have been a Westy one at some point but has been "Country Kitchened" with some ply.
I think I can see the stay on one of the hinges that holds the seat up while you ferret around under the seat trying to find stuff.
Better pictures required.

Thanks to all those that have commented - all useful information. Seen a couple of early westys in images, and they have the basic foam mattress. Must admit, quite like the option of moving away from the over engine box....its a right pain when trying to get to the engine, and this bed is completely flat,

Simon - agree with you, pictures aren't brilliant - more coming later tonight. I also think that it may be a butchered westy.....perhaps to transfer from a LHD to RHD bus.

Once again, you lot have come up trumps! I have had a look at the westy plans in the wiki...and they suggest wooden boards on hinges, with the triangular supports underneath, as spoken about above. I had thought the bed was metal framed. I suppose this is where the 18mm ply comes in - its strong!

Thanks

I have a vague recollection that you cant or might be awkward to fit LHD in a RHD

If you look in the pics, you can see a hole in the top of the cupboard, thats for the table leg in a LHD Westy, so it looks like they have taken the interior and fitted it in a RHD van, unless it's one of those early, rare RHD Westys, but I doubt it as the rear wardrobe is never on the same side as the cooker etc (well, on the very few pictures of RHD Westys that I have seen)

Looks westy, but as stated, hard to tell from pics. Bob is right, the left/right box pieces need reversed for RHD fit. As Si says, pics show it as RHD fit.
