Does anyone recognize these bits?

Post by silverbullet »

Hoping that someone will recognize these front seats and tell me what they are from?

Yes I know that they've been recovered, but are VW from the head rest fixings and rake adjusters, besides they are straight onto the T3 rails.

The headrest rods are at a narrower/closer pitch when compared to T3 ones and just zinc plated (the black bit at the bottom is just tape that I forgot to remove)

###rods are 180mm pitch###7mm diameter###

Once I find out what they are, does anyone have any matching rear headrests (need 3) preferably in black vinyl? Would be happy to swap for some ok caravelle ones (each have a snag on the back but otherwise good) once I've investigated the R&R bench for fixing holes - guide tubes and clips still available from VW a couple of weeks ago!

Next up - this is my rad fan:

3 speed (air con, see?) even though I currently only get one speed and my aircon compressor is missing...the thing is - what are those two hose tails sticking out of the motor body? Yes they really are hose connections. I've gone through my Bentley manual but can't find reference to them.
Anyone? Oh and has anybody got one going spare? Some rocking horse poop would be handy too!

I think the seats are the south african t3 seats, they are a little broader in the shoulder and more comfortable ime

ignore the pipes they are just for air, same motor/body used on some audis which have pipes aparrantly

Folks at the other place seem to think that the pipes are for wading - seems reasonable.

Need to identify those headrests though - same as Golf 2 or passat maybe? Need to get some fitted to the rear bench for the offspring's wellbeing.

PS Guide tubes and clips still available from VW and less than half the price at Heritage.

headrests are a SA part - they were locally manufactured 22S parts numbers not available from vw except in SA

try syncro hospital - Stuart may be able to send you some over - the rear seats didn't have them in SA I believe, belts were optional back then, they are a few years behind us safety wise hence they built T3s in the 90's by when forward control vehicles couldn't pass euro safety tests

Thanks Aidan

Looks like nothing on this bus is going to be exactly straightforward. I'll drill the rear seat frame once I've found something that looks about right.

The headrest rods have a 180mm pitch, 7mm dia. They use std. VW guide tubes. Someone has suggested maybe early Polo but they'll take some finding now.

Got Stuart looking for some now.

Silverbullet, I don't want to hijack your thread but I've got exactly the same rad fan on my Syncro. I've no idea what the hose tails are for, but if it was wading then how come there are no breather pipes attached (it would be coincidence if the pipes had been removed from both vans). I suppose it's possible that the fans have been replaced in the past with a part that had an application on another model. You haven't I suppose had the case off the fan to see if there's an impellor on the fan shaft? I'd have a look myself but I can't be arsed.
I suppose we'll have to wait for a Guru to put us out of our misery! :D

Well mine's not a synchro but it's a long way from home. Is yours SA too? My bus seems to have a lot/most of its original fittings. Could be that these tails are for certain export markets only.

What started all this was a rad & fan that I bought at Vanfest (bargain!) to replace mine which has a split at the rad breather screw... Then I find that the fan's different. Not sure about the 3-pin temp switch either.

This wasn't supposed to be a project!

Mine's not SA - it was originally supplied to the Welsh Water Authority in its previous existence as a panel van. I suppose that I'll have to take the fan casing off when I'm next under the van - which seems to be regular occurence! I'll let you know what I find, if anything. :?
