alternator !

Hi all,, what sort of reading should i be getting at my battery as i think my alternator is not performing(had to jump start myself from my leisure battery ) i have a 1982 1.6 ct lump ? :?:

also if my alternator is knackered is there a diode or brush pack to save it to save money ?

at least 13V

yep brush packs are about £15

Thanks chaps... i am running 2 12v 65ah ford top of the range batteries in my van that i got for free , could i upgrade my alternator to cope with these and if so what would fit ? my currant alternator is only putting out 12.23v not enough me think' :ok s...

Give the alt a few sharp taps with the end of a metal bar this sometimes loosens the carbon buildup inside the regulator then see what she's churning out :ok

if your batteries are flat then you may find the reading is lower than it should be.

Bosch regulators are set to deliver 13.9-14.2 volts .....the 12.23 reading is 'battery voltage only' and indicates that the alternater isn't charging the leisure batteries AT ALL! The most likely cause is WORN OUT brushes in the regulator brush pack. Non genuine regulators (with bushes) can be picked up for less than a tenner.
Most obvious upgrade would be to find a 90amp/hour unit as a replacement.

Contact details for the regulator/bush pack supplier:
Vehicle Electrics (Birmingham Ltd) The aftermarket number for MY alternator (yours may be different) was VERG 1009 but they have a list to cross reference your particular aternator number against so you can order the correct item. Mine was £9.70 incl post.
