cant start my van :(

having problems starting my van, thought i know bet its the battery. no new battery no joy, thought maybe starter motor ceased, lights come on on turning key but wont turn over, also want work lights or pump , but if i go on to leisure battery hey presto we have the pump working. any help would be gradfully recieved. any ideas on the best course of actions?

You could tell us a little more about your van - like what sort of engine you have, for example - and perhaps try a little harder to express yourself clearly, its hard to understand quite what the problem is from your post.

1 Are the battery terminals tight?
2 Cable conected to starter motor clean and not corroded?
3 Bad earth from battery?

Well from the little bit of info thats been given i believe you,ve fitted a new battery so firstly i'd go with checking the wiring on the starter then if its all ok i'd be giving the starter a few sharp whacks with a hammer while someone turns the key, if that doesn't do the job i'd see if it tow starts other than that check the wiring on the rear of the ignition barrel.

sorry this is all new to me right its an 89 1.9 petrol carvelle. on putting key in ignition just get ignition light coming on wont turn over . could i have turned something oiff i shouldnt have all new to me. please have patience.Doesnt make a clicking sound when trying to turn it over, cd player lights up but no sound, very weird.also having bad week i ve killed the screen on the laptop so im looking at half SCREEN. AFRAID TO TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE. :roll

It could be the feed wire on to the starter motor solenoid.
They do work loose, it's just a crimp terminal. Have a reach round underneath & it will be apparent where it should be. Give it a clean up and push it back on tightly

see if you have dislodged any fuses in the glovebox. Happens to me sometimes.

When you turn the ignition fully on does the light on the dash go out? Turn on your lights and turn on the ignition fully, do the headlight go very dim ...if so you battery is dead. In which case charge your battery and make sure your ignition light isnt on when driving , if it is then your alternator has packed up. Once youve charged your battery try starting again, if it starts hey presto if not, can you hear a click from your solenoid and are your lights full and bright...then follow the rest of advice given.
