golf gti steering wheel?

Post by smudge »

Can anyone tell me, will a Mk1 (or Mk2) Golf Gti steering wheel fit a 89 Westy?

I have a VW steering wheel on the bus, but it"s not the stock one. I'm not sure what it's off but I do know that you can't swivel the captains seat all the way round as it gets stuck on the wheel. It looks bigger than a stock one, but I'm not sure by how much.

So, can I fit a Golf Mk1 or 2 wheel?

Cheers all

Well the answer is...you cannot swizel the captains seat all the way around on the drivers side! only back to the door.

But..if you want to fit a MK1 GTI steering wheel here are some pointers.
What it looks like:

What you need to raise the switches:

Fitted on the column like this:

Fitted behind the switch gear to raise them so the self cancelling works on the indicators:

You need a little plastic off here:

The standard long screws now screw into these raise mounts:

Looks like this Note* partially blocks the speedo...but does look good, also will make the steering heavier, especially Non powered vehicles.

Anyone want to buy this particular wheel off me and the mounting posts it's for sale....£15.00 collection only or if you prefer £25 fitted.
I've bought myself a Momo.

Thanks Martin!

A very comprehensive reply  If that's as far as the seat will swivel round, that's fine, however the steering wheel that's on there is still a bit too big really. And now I'm going to ask you where the mounting screws were purchased from

Mind you, you've got me thinking about the Momo wheel now, why are you getting one of those then, do they look better?

Cheers :ok

The MK1 GTI 4 button was nice but the Momo is better, then again, a Momo and mounting boss is going to cost you three times as much as a MK1 Golf wheel.......£15 to £25 for the Golf wheel, £50 to £80 for a Momo and boss (if you can find one)
Momo with correct boss is a straight fit.

As far as those mounting posts are concerned, I picked some up from my local PC custom build shop for another user on the forum, think they were £1.50 ......don't mind sorting them for you?

I must admit it is the correct alternative than bending the horn ring contacts, plus it deserves praise for a comprehensive explanation ( with images),,,,, :ok

Indeed....I have heard that some peeps extend the self cancel lug so self cancel works properly but as you say you need to bend brass horn contact accutely to touch the ring...not very good in my opinion. If your self cancel worked without modification I'm suprised...most don't!

I'll beg to differ on that Martin.

Try .... Seatbelt stalk down, doorside arm down and lowered till horizontal, seat pulled right back, turn seat 90 deg, push seat forwards, turn again, pull seat back. :ok

Cheers Ian, I will give it a go..... ....my California started out with the ugraded /standard padded wheel and now has a Momo fitted. I'm sure I tried all this when I first got the van (with the standard wheel fitted) and it could be that if this was possible..it might not be now the Momo is in place.
But you definately have me thinking  I will let you know.
