Re: WARNING Rubbish fuel hose from Pearl Products
The motortrade has suffered from counterfeit goods for years, parts and packaging made to look like well known, branded items. The Aerospace industry in particular (for obvious reasons) has a very stricked sourcing policy as they know just how easy these dopplegangers find there way into the system.
There are many companies that rebrand their products (don't actually make them but market a range) Quentin Hazel, Unipart for instance.
My guestimate of this incident: is that the hose is cheap chinese/Taiwanese inport with standard coolant spec but falsely labelled (because it costs more) as petrol/grease and this has just 'got by' the buyers at Pearl, tis easy as it looks the same...

Re: WARNING Rubbish fuel hose from Pearl Products
The reference to Jag made me think, 11mm is 7/16", which is a readily available hose size. If your local factors hasn't got any (or you don't want to use them again
) there is some goodyear hose on ebay, £3ish a meter.

Re: WARNING Rubbish fuel hose from Pearl Products
Funny that this must be one of those sizes that got "carried through" from English sizes into the metricated age in the 70's / 80's and even the likes of Bosch decided to go with it.
More info when I've gone and had a well-meaning ruck at my local factors...
Yeah, I'll give the e-jumble sale a miss on this one!

7/16" is not 11mm. Close, but not the same.
7/16" = .4375"
11mm = .4331"
that's .0044" bigger then spec.

Re: WARNING Rubbish fuel hose from Pearl Products
I've worked in the hydraulic industry for 20 years and unfortunately there are hose manufacturers that are prepared to sell anything. Many years ago a company I worked for imported thousands of metres of hose branded ISO 7840 which is a marine fuel hose. The manufacturer was based in Indonesia and had a reputation for supplying a cheap, but well made products. We sent samples to an independant lab to confirm the hose would pass the heptane burn test required by the spec before we started selling the hose. The result came back as a "fail". It turned out the hose was air hose branded as fuel hose. The manufacturer assured us it was a production error and we had been sent the wrong product. They never did supply us with a marine fuel hose. The truth was they made a few types of hose and branded them with whatever the importer had ordered!
If I can find a manufacturer who makes 11mm I'll post some info.

Yes, 7/16 is 11.1323, quite good enough
Yes, also rife in the aviation business, with a lot more than hose, whole replacement components, and of course, where the consequences are potentially even worse
.. and the potential profits even greater as well !
Anyway, that's all good information compiled in one day on here about a bit of duff hose

Re: WARNING Rubbish fuel hose from Pearl Products
I bought 5 meters of the VW hose from the syncro tank to the fuel pump, think it is 11mm. If anyone wants some let me know and I will put a bit in the post. It was not that expensive. N0203001 11mm X 3.5mm X 5 meters = £21.07
Only used about 30 cm

Cheers Simon, I'll take you up on that - PM either way like you I only need about a foot (no giggling at the back, you girls)

Gtimadman - this is the hose from the tank into the pump - not pressurized.

El dodgo hose winging its way back to Pearl Tech Dept. We'll see what happens - they offered some compensation before I finished telling them what was up.

Re: WARNING Rubbish fuel hose from Pearl Products
During a trip to my local independant parts supplier who has served West Lancs for at least 30 years, I noticed they only sell GATES fuel hose.
The following link is a very useful web site for many hose applications which can be used on our vehicles and not only fuel hose.....

Regards,

PS, They also sell the elusive brake servo hose.

Re: WARNING Rubbish fuel hose from Pearl Products
Latest: Iffy hose went to Pearl and they rang up to tell me! Turns out that they don't even have laboratories here to test it...
"we're just an importer, sir"
Jeez.
PS nice one Fritz, looks like a good source of the right stuff. I need some Vulcoflexes too!

and...
there must be more?
Being an importer doesn't absolve them from responsibility to their customers (the ratailers)
Like are they throwing the whole batch back.. ?
Trading Standards involved... ?
Did you get an apology?
etc.

Re: WARNING Rubbish fuel hose from Pearl Products
Got a call this morning. Reports came back that hose was to spec for petrol but not suitable for biofuels (it had unleaded in it, so doesn't apply)
It did say however that there were "unidentified contaminants" within the hose rubber.
Sounds like spillage in transit to me.
Tech.Support man at Pearl is still dissatisfied with the whole thing as there is no definite conclusion. Sending me a replacement but it doesn't cover the hassle.
Who's to blame? Manufacturer, Shippers, Factors?
Putting it down to experience. Buy VAG next time.

Re: WARNING Rubbish fuel hose from Pearl Products
What standard was it marked up as? BS AU108 by any chance? Three times I've had problems with that stuff cracking or delaminating after a surprisingly little use. They were not from the same batch either, bought years apart. Two times were enough to teach me never to use it again. The third time I fitted a piece by mistake (in the same location as silverbullet - injection tank to pump). The third was the worst. After less than a year the outer rubber layer had almost completely fallen off, exposing the cloth layer. I'll never use it again
I only stock decent branded (Gates, Manuli, etc) SAE 100R6 injection hose now.
When I worked for a large manufacture of yellow excavators we had a problem with a hose from a large and very well known Indonesian manufacturer / rebrander(?) of 16mm coolant / heater hose. They kept splitting in service despite being well within spec. I found the cause in the end. If you kinked a piece of the hose 90 degrees in your hands you could hear the fibres in the cloth layer snapping inside. Total crap. The solution was to use a Goodyear hose to the spec recommended by the engine manufacturer. More expensive, but less expensive than fixing failures under warranty and annoying customers. Problem solved.
