What paint for the fiberglass top?

Post by Helga »

My pop top is starting to look messy: what paint should I use? It is the original poptop off a 1982 westfalia.

Thanks!

If its still the original white plastic/fibre glass, give it a couple of hours elbow grease and the results are great. a tiny bit of cream cleaner on the really stubborn bits. i spent a day once doing a high top that had not been 'seen too' for years and i was toying with the idea of painting it...i would have had to fully clean it first anyway...

If it does not clean up

Use Rustolium, and roller it on

The bloke who is currently respraying my camper (not the roof) recommended UPVC window frame cleaner.
I will try some in the next couple of weeks and let you know - unless anyone else has tryed it?..

I'd have thought any auto paint suitable for bumpers (or the tailgates of ghastly yank mpv's and 4x4's) would do the job ok. I think that it has to have some different plasticiser added to keep it flexible, could be wrong.
Would like to know as I will be colouring my pop top to match the bus, when I finally get to fitting it.

Thanks everybody - I like the rustoleum idea... I would just clean it... which I will anyway before painting obviously! But someone has painted it before, badly in places, so I think a coating of rustoleum is perhaps best? :D
