I suspect your posted pic is the answer lol.
Re resistance test you check the resistance between one end of the cable and the other, can be done with everything connected. lol

what should the resiatnce be over say 5ms of cable though?

About 0.1 to 0.2 Ohms (ish!) :D

This picture would certainly be one to save and post as an example of how the solenoid switch wire should NOT look lol.
At least you can say this was DEFINATELY the cause of your fault.
