new cam
new bearings

the noise seems to be coming from the left hand side center as you look at it from the rear

"set correctly"???? Personally I would only ever pur 1/2 (Half) a turn on as preload from just touching.. if 2 turns it prob wont clear for ages..
Take rocker cover off use a small torch, shine it down the pushrod tubes and look to see if the pushrod is in the middle, in its cup... but it it isnt it will be mashed by now.. and if it was when it was installed it prob will have dropped back in and the rocker is loose....

What oil you got in it? 15w40 is best... anything thinner may cause it to leak down..

Although the Haynes manual tells you to turn in a further 2 turns after contact, VW now recommend about three quarters of a turn to one turn.
The manual wasn't wrong when published, just a bit out now but it should still be ok with the Haynes settings.
Would still change it though just to be sure.
