Hot starting problems

Hi, does anyone have an idea why my t25 Aircooled wont start when hot, I can hear the solenoid click but it wont turn or when it does turn its very slow. also becoming increasingly difficult to start cold now. any ideas of a fix. Thanks

Hi could be the starter motor bush, starter motor or even the igintion timing could be out...

I think you starter motor needs a check up or renewing.
As Ian says the bush could be shagged orthe connections need re making.
I had a sticky solenoid.. faffed about with it for several fruitless months, then replaced it with a reconditioned unit .. £60

Any all year round mechanic will tell you that the vast majority of work this end of the year lies in heating, batteries and starter motors. Could be the bush but contrary to popular belief starters can 'go slow', particularly as temperatures drop - had a few do that to me. Worth checking the connections are good on starter (particularly the earth) and battery connections too but could well be the starter telling you its time it retired.

Starters turn slowly for sevral reasons;
Battery is becoming u/s or improperly charged.
Cables have a high resistance, usually caused by corrosion on terminals or the terminals parting from the cable, either is easily checked visually.
The starter motor is 'lazy' this can be due to the comm needing cleaning (the bit the brushes touch), worn brushes or other internal faults.
One and two are easily checked at home, preferably using a multimeter, if you dont feel confident about stripping the starter and its definitely that take it to an auto electrician and get them to put it on the test rig and get a repair quote, often much cheaper than a new or remanufactured starter motor.

You forgot to mention the most common one (on these vans anyway)... the bush at the end of the starter motor gear shaft in the bell housing. And like I said before if the ignition timing is out,it will make it turn over slow (well it did on mine anyway). :shock:
