1.6 td starting problems

Hi all little problem with the van starts great when cold but when the engines hot and i turn it off it struggles to start again anyone had same problem cheers mac.

Try pulling the cold start lever, if that helps then either get the pump timed up properly, or replace the pump.

I have the same problem the engine is 2 years old with about 5000 miles on it. It was the same from new it will start fine from cold and ok 5 minuets after turning off but if you leave it from 10 minuets to about an hour it takes about 5 seconds to start. It seems to be when the engine is too warm for the glow plugs. I have also been told it's pump timing as Simon Says. It has never let me down so i just live with it.

yup, had the same problem. The temperature sensor that tells the hot plug relay that the engine is warm/hot did just that. I checked the timing and it was OK and the only way it would start when it is warm was to disconnect the sensor. Only problem that I can see by doing this is that the hot plugs come on for a time at every start and may shorten their life.

Here you go mate,
These instructions show a proper VW DTI that screws into the end of the pump but I use a standard magnetic base one but if you do this it must be anchored very firmly.
