AAZ is in the Villa 3

Post by ringo »

At last! Finally swapped the 1Y with the AAZ.

Now the villa 3 accelerates!

Fitted the 5 speed box from a JX with it - but im not too happy with the selector box - going from 1st to 2nd is a bit tough to get the hang of.

Also fitted a large oil cooler, in front of the main rad - with a thermo sandwich plate.

I havent fitted any clocks yet - and i dont want to apart from a rev counter.

Off to Cambridge tomorrow which should show me a water leak or two :)

Big thanks to Elvis and Harryman. Cheers fellas.

When I fitted a 5 speed box recently the selection was really sloppy, but fitting a short shifter made it better. Without the short shifter there was no 'notch' to push the stick to the left against when selecting 2nd or 3rd, but with it there is something to push against, it takes a much harder push to get across to 1st or reverse territory. What I don't know is whether the short shifter itself caused the improvement, or whether it was just from setting up the gear lever correctly.

The issue i have is the whole left side of the box is a "push down". This was great to get it into reverse only - but now i have to get it into 1st - which involves pushing down. Getting it out is an issue.

I can remove the piece of steel so i dont have to push down to go to first - so i might try that....

1st isnt a crawel gear unless its a syncro - but it aint much cop to be honest.

However, the five speed box has got so much more top end than my old four speed so im really happy with that.

ours is push across for first, but push across and down for reverse. it's in a petrol bus, and even in this only need first for fairly severe hill starts. the aaz must pull away fine in second.

Hi Guys, I have a Villa 3 too, with a 1.6td in it. I want to upgrade to a 1.9td so which engine code am i looking for, a 1Y or an AAZ? is this pretty much a straight swap? i have a 5 speed box in it at the moment, and i have read and heard of needing taller tyres to get the max power transfer? any recommendations/advice would be really welcome. Im after more speed to be honest 8)
