Key number

Post by meggles »

I have looked in Tech and searched postings but can't find what I'm looking for so... help!
Is the 4 digit number on the square "shank" part of my slider handle (late) the number I need to get a key cut? Also, are the keys only available from VW. (Can I still get one for a 1985 van?).
Thanks

Theres at least one person on ebay that can cut keys from your lock number. Location - I'll leave that to someone else - must hit the sack.

Thanks Covkid, and Rozzo for pm. My only question I need answering now is:
Is the 4 digit number on the square "shank" part of my slider handle (late) the number I need to get a key cut? If not, how do I remove the barrell to find the number? I've got a good manual on CD but my PC needs the attention of my trusted expert 'cos it won't play discs!!!

Not done a slider but on my boot lock it was on the end of the barrel itself (which is logical if you think about it). It won't be on the handle - only part of the key barrel which can be changed as you probably know. On mine it was on the casting part of the barrel that moves the lock itself (didn't need taking apart to see that bit). Barrels usually are held in with a small pin that you can knock through with a suitably small punch or nail.

This is tailgate lock (see 4 digit number?) - may be same or similar on slider:

You can also see the retaining pin (its actually a tiny tube)

I take it that's an old lock you showed the number of Covkid!!!
Anyway, I found a very small grub screw ob the handle itself, which released the barrell. There are no numbers on the barrell so I am assuming the 4 digit number on the shank is the key number! (I hope so). I was told it should have a couple of letters before the numbers. I'm not sure the garage is correct in saying that though!

Number was doctored in photoshop :)

Not sure what you mean by 'shank'. Can't see it being on the handle casting unless anyone knows different although to be honest its not hard to file the lock parts to fit any key.

Nice one!
Can't take piccy 'cos wifes out on a "p" up and taken camera. The square shank I refer to is the bit that goes through the opening mechanism. Same as on a house interior door really. When you push the handle down it pulls the catch back out of the recess. :?

Awaiting a reply from ebay dealer so rang local VW dealer (JCT600). Need to take V5 and key number. They'll cut a key for £15! Initially quoted £50
Think I'll try local specialist key shop.
