What's a 1Y?

Hey guys. I've just bought a T25 Crewcab with a 1.7D in it atm. Just got a few more engine related questions. Which 1.9 comes most recommended, a 1Y or an AAZ? Obviously one has turbo and one not, so what's the difference in general MPG, driveability etc? Also do they both fit straight in, or is much fettling required? If i change the engine then I wouldn't really be doing it for much of a power boost, just that the current lump has done 185k, so not sure how much longer it will plug on. May just change for peace of mind if I can do it relatively cheaply. Thanks.

1Y sounds like it fits your requirements.

Personally, i would get a 1Y as a backup (store it in the garage) when you find one and keep driving the 1.7 until it dies. Those 1.7's are great engines - and if its been treated nicely then there is no reason why it shouldnt do another 185k....

Cheers Ringo. Think i'll keep the van as is for the moment yeh. Driving it up from Norwich back home to Bradford next weekend so will see how that goes.. Going to check out the local scrapyards for Golfs or Ibizas when I get the chance. A low mileage, rear ended example would be perfect! Cheers for your input

No worries dude - my 1.7 took us all over France/Spain on a huge trip and then a few more trips to France (as far as the Alps once).
The only reason i changed it was because it started using more oil than diesel!
To the end, it never let me down.

For £200 to £300 quid a 1Y (plus about 20 hours labour if you dont do it yourself) will give you another 100k miles of motoring.

Your talking about £500 for a car and then another £1000 for the bits? And then you have to find a clever person willing to install it. We havent even thought about a gearbox yet. All in your probably looking at over £3k.
Then add 20% on the fuel that your going to have to buy as they do about 25mpg...

As i said, get a grip.

PS. I admire people who spend a great of money on things like a scooby conversion - but its not for everyone is it. Basically your throwing money away just to have fast camper van. Awesome if thats what you want - but its hardly "Better" than a diesel - its just different.

This is also not strictly true, if your van is registered on the V5 as a Motorcaravan with a GVW of 2500kg or less, you are exempt from paying.

ok, i have a 1.6 td and would like more power(speed really) what difference would it make by fitting an AAZ? how much work is involved and where would i find an AAZ? there is so much info on here iv ended up lost n confused! i know jack about engines, but a mate is a good mechanic, tho not familiar with VW's.

An AAZ would help your acceleration i have an AAZ in one of my campers and a 1.6 d with no turbo in another camper, when i drive my camper with the AAZ its great up hills and accelerates like a car but i am still only cruising at 65mph on the motorway because the gearbox really could also do with being upgraded.

There lies your second problem. Once you have changed your engine you are going to be faced with a gear ratio issue..... £££

AAZ can be found in golfs and similar of around 1994/5 you are looking at a MK3. It is not quite a straight swap, there is lots of info on the wiki,

The AAZ engine runs quite hot, when mine was done the cooling system was renewed, and this keeps it cool nicely, tunning can be carried out on this engine but further cooling is reccomended for any tunning as it will run hotter.

Idealy a gearbox rebuild with taller ratios or a taller final drive. There is a gearbox guru on here who is master of gearbox rebuilds, Aiden he deals with all those issues,

How fast do you want to go ?? the 2.1 petrol does about 95mph, but i bet it drinks juice doing it, my AAZ wil do about 35mpg at about 65mph.

If you want to spend more money you can go down the TDI route, you will deffo need a gearbox for these engines tho, figure around a grand maybe a touch more for a gearbox from german ebay , about 350 - 600 quid for the tdi engine (example maybe a 1z) and a whole lot of trickery with spanners and electrics for a decent mechanic, and quite a large labour chagre, again nothin that hasnt been done on here by baxter or spannerboy to name a couple and probably many others.

If you have loads of money and dont mind blowing it you can make a T25 go fast, there is a rover V8 one for sale at the mo, sure that goes quite well, pleanty of subaru's allready done for sale from time to time, maybe cheaper to sell your 1.6td and buy one ready made ?

All depends what you want to spend. My 1.6d with no turbo is slow and steady it cruises at 55 on the motorway (but is capable of about 63) and climbs big hills in 2nd gear at 20mph, I love it.
