Dad will fix it ! HELP

Post by peteabbott »

Hello all, sorry this is not a T3 question but it is a Dad who owns a T3 question. (Advert over)
Can someone help please 1250 Fiat Punto........there I,ve said it now. Daughters car (a bargain she says) head gasket gone so I have removed it and having the head skimmed. Paynes manual gives two headbolt torque settings..
30Nm then 60Nm then 90degs and then 90degs ALSO it gives 20Nm then 30Nm then 90degs then 90degs. Obviously I am using new stretch bolts but does anyone know which settings are correct please, dads pride at stake :run

Remind me in the morning and I will check at work, but like others say... you often get two goes with head bolts then its time to throw away...

Blown head gaskets are very common on this model, I've done two in the past spraying coolant out the rear.
There really isn't going to be much difference between these settings baring in mind that you will finish by stretching the bolts through half a turn....
Quite an easy gasket to change as well.

Thanks REDWESTIE. This one was boiling and what I can only describe as gas locking the cooling system. The thermostat was stuck shut and I think the privious owner must have driven it like this for some time. I had a flat edge on the head with feelers and cannot find a descepency but having it skimmed anyway FIART! Quite obvious leak marks on the head gasket between No,s 1 & 4 bores to water jacket though.
This is what my daughter bought on a whim, its a bargain dad ! The sump had 1.5Ltrs of oil more than it should have had :o
FULLSUNIAN it would be appreciated thankyou.

Weldore :P No mate, the second set of torques are in the bit at the back, you know that bit thats a just in case bit.
Good man that FULLSUNIAN he must have a daughter, they never really leave home do they.

Its the bit that says et sec and normally it is quite clear but the index just says under headbolts Section 10 and et sec section 17 ?
Section 10 gives the torque for three different engine sizes but ec bloomin sec just give the different torque which doesn,t relate to any of the other settings. cement mixers are so much easier.....everything is just FT

30Nm then 60Nm then 90degs and then 90degs

Sounds more right for new bolts

JX diesel stretch bolts

Head bolts (40 N-m + 60 N-m + 90 degrees + 90 degrees; follow correct tightening sequence on gasket package)

From my haynes. No second set of figures.

I bought one for my daughter last year - bargain £220 - only needed a new £28 sensor.
E D I T: the other set of figures isn't ft/lb is it?

Her husband is not exactly what I would call "hands on" but mad about Ipswich town footy, so that says a lot

I have already fitted a new bathroom and kitchen in the house they bought that they said was a bargain. I have three kids (one of each) and this one when she was younger always had a pair of overalls on and followed me and worked with me all the time and she is still not afraid to get her hands dirty, she does all her car repairs herself normally. At least I have got someone to leave all me tools to when I curl me toes up.
