Alternative Diesel engines

I've looked on WIKI but can't find the answer
In laymans terms, what alternative engines, from which vehicles (incl years) can be fitted to replace my 1.6 diesel. (Non turbo preferred). For example:
1.9 golf of 1985 to 1992 vintage will fit (Made this up to demonstrate what I mean!). Don't want any that are known problem causers! Please keep it simple. I may be changing my engine next year because of a major life change. (Just think I got lucky re work.. don't ask!). Don't want to spend a fortune on parts to facilitate a swap.I may be doing loads of shows and touring so want something to carry me economically, reliably and efficiently over BIG distances........

when you decide to do it keith there are quite a few of us that have done the swap and a few about to do the swap.if you need any advice pm me.i know the basics to get it in and running but others might be more help.

praps we should have a thread in the alt engine forum that lists all the peeps who can help with different conversion.that way you dont need to search through loads of stuff that may not answer your problem but you can pm any of the names or look in the members online for someone.just an idea innit

oh and the engine you are looking for is a 1Y or an AEF (ive not fitted this one but from what i have read its a bit more involved)

oh and one more thing....you said dont ask but.....

I just wanted to know what vehicle I could buy as a scrapper, ie Golf GTI etc of whatever vintage and get the whole vehicle, take the engine and scrap the rest! (Cheap as chips hopefully!).

Hi Keith, If you really want to go down this Route I will bring you some informative mattereial. ( to Rainton) that I Reserched before I converted my Air-Cold to Water warmth and then fitted Various Smoker,s.

Each and every 1 to there own, I owned an Air-Cold for 3.5 years, Heat exchangers Replaced + Heater Pods, etc, You had to drive yerrr bus for 0.5hr before you even got a whisper of warm air to defrost yerr front screen, its was that cold in winter you got ice on inside of the screen, Cured that by fitting a Derv Eber, and used to run it whilst driving, and secondly fuel consumption was cr£p lucky if you got 18to the gallon, 20 if you wore a pair of soft slippers, with open toes---------------------- . I changed my engine for the same reason that you did, I enjoy it more now when I pi$$ past the air-colds on the flat or even better still when climbing the hilly sections (Rekon you have more hill billy bits in yr neck of the woods) Lol!---
Have you counted recently how many T2,s you see on the hard shoulder.-

Grumps, thanks "brother" not had chance to run it through but will no doubt be enlightened! Thanks for taking the trouble. An example of why I asked for laymans terms is this: I needed a starter motor. I was told only the one for the basic 1.6 diesel wil fit. I just bought a TD starter hoping to swap the solenoid, or butcher it for parts. Guess what, it fits! It's a slimmer starter body but all else looks the same and it starts my van. That's all I need. Think there may be lot's of us who get confused over 1Y, AAZ, normally aspirated etc. I nearly paid £130 for a starter, rather than just the £25 I paid at the scrapyard. I realise that if you are going to do an alternative engine you need to have some savvy but it just helps if you need to make a quick/imformed decision over buying a car for the engine.

Now in a common voice:

Great Dave, toying with idea of a bigger lump in the back but this one is just fine. A bigger engine is at the lower end of my list of priorities. I can now count the things I have to do to finish the van mechanically. 1) Oil leak on filler tube (gasket- simple) 2)Set pump timing up (son doing it- simple). 3) Oil leak on crank oil seal or sump gasket- poss both ends ( I did replace them when I put engine in not so simple but not that difficult either!). 4) Fuel leak on No4 injector (simple, but touching wood 'cos I don't want to tempt fate). 5) Just a load of bits and bats, like spade terminals to renew etc.
AND THAT'S IT!!!!
Travelled back at 55ish and no problems whatsoever with overheating. A bit of oil at back end is all I can "complain" about. I even got my starter replaced cheaply! A TD one fitted!
All in all I reckon I'm due to give my van the biggest hug it's ever had! I (sorry, we- me you and others on 80-90)have saved a T25 from the scrapyard and it's a nice feeling

The leak in number 4 injector might be the return pipe, I have to replace mine regularly.
