Petrol Tank Leak - advise please

Post by Nice Dude »

Hi all, i noticed today i have a fuel leak from what appears to be from the petrol tank itself, today is the first time in the 5 weeks i have had the VW that i decided to 3/4 fill the tank. after doing so i smelt fuel and checked, it first appeared to be coming from the seam (drivers side) but with a torch, albeit a bi difficult to see the top part of the tank it appears to be coming from above the seam somewhere. It doesnt seem to be leaking when the van is parked up stationary, only after running it down the road and back does it leak. I can see through the drivers wheel arch that the fuel filler neck into the tank is dry so before i drain off £40 worth of fuel is there any known issues with these vans with fuel tanks leaking? any advise is useful. thanks (By the way is a petrol 1.9dg 1985 Hi Top)

a common problem.it will no doubt be one of the breather pipe grommets.or a cracked pipe.https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... g#p7381751.

Any of the breathers can be perished and may not leak when stationary as the fuel isnt sloshing about.. lots of info on here about leaky tanks.. or possible items..
