temp sensor just burnt my finger..!

Fitted a temp sensor coz there was a connector plug lying spare.

After a few days I have a water leak.

Now, Stan the Van has been sitting all night and when I took sensor out it was hot hot!

There's a picture of me point to sensor and plug and you can see the water elbow where it goes in.

Just tested the connector. Seems to be permanent 12Vdc

What have I done wrong??

More info needed as I'm not sure what you mean when you say you had a spare connector and used it. With a permanent live feed it will get warm rather than hot. What colour code is the wire you have used for the sender and what year van is it, also, is that the plastic thermostat housing with 2 senders?

I've only had Stan for a couple of months but have worked on a diesel before. I serviced the engine (oil & fuel/oil filter change) and when digging about I saw the connector you see in photo.

Now the oil pressure sensor wire was disconnected and plugged onto that blue wire (bottom right) you see and down to earth. So I bought an oil press sensor and fitted that yellow wire. All very well so far.

Now the plastic plug with the brown and red wires was sitting loose. And the water pipe bracket had something missing. Which is shown as that elbow there. So I bought a (water) temp sensor thinking that was it and bunged it in and connected the plug connector.

After a few days I spring a leak and trace it back to this. But as I take it out it is HOT! Hot enough to burn. I refit and don't connect wires but sure it must do something..



I have 12V permanent with ignition on & off. And the other seems to go to earth.

I'm puzzled.

Any ideas??

the secondary water pump doesn't work when ignition first turned on and doesn't run on after switch off.

Am I right in saying it should?

But I know it runs as tested by putting 12V to it.

Could this not be a temp sensor but a switch? Which would explain (I think) why it got hot. I used the resistance in the sensor as an element.

Your probably right about the function, I had a quick look at some early diesel wiring diagrams but couldn't find anything. This connector may have been introduced later or isn't referenced. May be someone with a diesel will help out on this one.
