Clutch woes.

Post by pedro »

I've just replaced clutch master and slave cylinders on my 82 T3. When it comes to bleeding, I'm getting nothing coming through. I've checked for blockages and leaks and everything seems fine. There is no resistance on the pedal at all. Is it possible I have an air lock, or have I made an obvious error somewhere?
Any advice is appreciated.

Bentley manual says to only pressure bleed the clutch, have you been using a pressure bleeder? If not gunson do a inexpensive one.

resevoir topped up?
crack the join before the gearbox to let it run through.. reconnect and bleed...

Failing that, pressure bleed...

Usually Kev, so long as gunge hasn't collected at the joins. Sometimes it collects at the slave bleed nipple and I've seen one that need a hook/pick set inserting to clear the build up ... the front to back pipe was fooked though.

Hes replaced the master too.. may not be getting fluid down it.. should be no reason why it shouldnt creep down under gravity... getting the system reasonably full (to the join at the box) should help.. but if it aint coming out a check for a blockage should be done...

All done now.
My Gunson decided it didn't want to seal, so I disconnected the union at the master and gave it a good old pump. This seemed to prime it. I then bled it in the normal way. It feels excellent now. Cheers for the advice.

Found the same with my gunson had to use two gasket to get it to seal on the master cylinder, think the cap on the pressure bleeder is too deep for the master cylinder.

The rubber gasket on the bottle seems to have deformed, so air escaped. I'm going to email them to see if I can get a replacement. Or find a bit of rubber and make a few up. I used it to do the brakes a while ago, using a pushbike wheel, to keep the pressure fairly low. It worked great.
