engine disk thingy

Post by Big Vern »

Hi,

i have a 1.9 dg petrol engine in my transporter and i have just treated it to an oil change and filter.
i now have a small leak coming from a disk like thingy ( about the size of an old penny)with a slot on it and this is located under the engine between the oil filter and the drain plug.

Q/ does anyone know what the disk with a slot in it does?
Q/can it be removed and is there some type of seal under it

it did not leak noticably before the oil change perhaps because the new oil is thinner?

cheers

Is the new oil "thinner"??? 15w40 is what you should be using..
Sure it isnt oil thats run down from around the oil filter (done up??) it would be rather strange for something to leak if it wasnt before...
(oh, the oil pressure relief spring and plunger lurks in there...)

Thanks for your response.

oil is deffo 15/40 and oil filter is not leaking. the oil is coming from the oil pressure relief spring thingy that you mentioned although the leak is small.
do you think it is curable? can this oil pressure relief spring be tightnend up or should i live with it

cheers

There is an alluminium washer behind the slotted screw (as well as the spring and plunger.
I changed mine last week and oil leak cured. My "disc thingy" came off using a large slotted screwdriver.
The washer is the same washer as used on the VW Type 4 sump plug available from main dealers.
