Overfilled my oil
Ive managed to overfil my oil, about a cm over the max, the van seems ok, but im concerned about ruining the seals.
Shall i drain the lot and refil with new, or is it possible to drain a bit and put the bolt back in ?

Re: Overfilled my oil
The last bit .....just loosen the bolt.....let a little out getting covered in oil......tighten...check....repeat until level sorts itself!

Re: Overfilled my oil
Leaving the filter on, drop the oil into a clean container and put 4 litres back in (the filter holds 1/2 ltr) you can use the remainder to top up with between services.

Re: Overfilled my oil
Normally I would say drain a little from the sump bung but there is an issue doing it this way....the already compressed seal may leak slightly! OR (without consequences) unscrew the oil filter and empty out all the all in it (the filter should easily come off by hand as it has only just been fitted) the rubber seal can be tightened/loosened several times without issue.

Re: Overfilled my oil
get some transparent tubing , bung one end down the filler tube and suck on the other end ,drain out about 3/4 litre into a clean bottle and then check the lever , add or suck out more til the level is ok

Re: Overfilled my oil
Well I had a bitch of a morning doing this simple task.
The oil drain bolt seems to be stuck fast, I flared one of my 13mm sockets and the other one just slips, tried a 1/2" but it wont go on properly and spins.
I tried the syphon thing but the sump is sow low theres not enough gravity to get the momentumn going (my head needs to be far lower)
Im guessing the only option is to park somewhere I can get lower, or take the strainer out instead ?

Re: Overfilled my oil
Hi, try typing SYPHON PUMP into an ebay search. It should come up with couple of cheap options designed for transfering oil out of drums. You should be able to buy the type like item 250494346997 in a pound shop or auto factor. I haven't tried it but I can't see why you couldn't pump the oil out through the filler tube?

Re: Overfilled my oil
To be honest, 1cm above max won't do any harm. Some problems can be caused by going above that ie. crank splashing in oil but the small amount you have gone above won't make any difference.
Would get the rounded bolt problems sorted though... Never know when you may need to undo them!

Re: Overfilled my oil
you could always park up or jack one side of the van up then drain the oil out via the rocker covers on the other side....don't fire up the engine though as you will fire oil everywhere!
To be honest the easiest way has already been stated... get some large diameter fish tank air pipe and then shove it down the filler pipe and 'suck' till you see the oil getting near to your mouth then dump the pipe in a clean container...thumb over pipe end when you have drained somewhere round the right amount off and then lift it up and empty the pipe back into the engine, using a rag to catch oil remove pipe from filler neck

It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

OK cheers.
Think im gonna fish out the poundland pump. TBH I think its running ok, but I dont wanna risk it.
Next question I guess, is where on earth do you get a new sump bolt from :S

breaker?
vw?
Tattychap....have you had the bolt off while in your ownership?? Do you know it comes off.......
The only reason I ask is cos while at Bashtie, Tigs sump bolt stripped, and we couldn't put it back in.....so it was araldited in to get the bus home and then to a garage as Tigs didn't have relay.......
Just be careful before you attack it with sommat meaty! There may be a reason why it isn't moving!

Re: Overfilled my oil
No ive never touched it.
Last time it was touched it was having its 500 mile "post recon engine" service at Elite.
Its not totally rounded off, but my cheap tools lost the battle. Hopefully a decent snap-on will budge it
