Start or no start!!

Post by vwduncan »

Wondering if anyone out there can help................?

Purchased our T25 2L Aircooled 1982 and picked up on Wednesday. It was a 50 mile trip home which was going fine until we turned into our road and she decided to cut out and not start again. I thought she may have run out of fuel so put 5 litres in. Left it over night and she fired up first thing in morning. Then 2 hours later she wouldn't start again. Again I left her and she started fine hours later. We were going to go on our maiden camping trip this weekend but with having to do overtime at work we decided just to go out for afternoon. She started first time and was driving great stopped for fuel and then she wouldn't start. Called out RAC (have to say they were with us within 15min) he started her first time - typical! He said he would follow us home and check her out there. He seemed to think it's something to do with the imobiliser she has fitted but I wasn't sure as she is turning over but just not starting. He got her started everytime,10 mins after he'd gone she wouldn't start again for me. I just don't understand what it could be. A new battery was fitted in August. Hope you techy guts understand what I'm on about :D

Any ideas gratefully appreciated

Hmmm,
Partially Blocked fuel filter.?Should be one under van somewhere between fuel tank and engine. Some have two second one close to carbs in engine bay itself.
Fuel pump.Does it have the original mechanical one or has an electric replacement been fitted.?
Difficult to help further without a bit more info.Does it have an aftermarket immobiliser fitted?
Always try simple things first.
Thats how I have survived todate! :rofl
Hmm How much did you say?For that you gotto be joking....

It could also be as simple as a wonky ignition barrel /connector in there

Hi!
This sounds like the common starter-bush-issue(?)
Typical when starts great at cold, but some miles away, engine hot & the starter turns the engine slowly.

Does the starter turns the engine rapidly when cold and then slowly when warmed up?

My 2.0 Aircooled was the same, i found 2 problems,

One was the breathers linking the 2 carbs the rubber bits perished and leaked occasionally i got a length of 3/8 petrol hose and replaced all of them. £5

Other one was my fuel filter was clogged and whilst driving about it shook the muck up and got it stuck around the filter then left it sitting and it all settled to the bottom. New huge filter and all is well again. £4.50

Do you get a missfire/stuttery feeling sometimes? if you go out and start it up have a look at the fuel filter see if it is anymore that half full and see if you can see the fuel pumping in. Ideally do that when it does start and when it doesn't.

Generally if the immobilser is at fault it just wont start at all.
