Getting oil into a gearbox how do you do yours?

Looking to do an oil change on my gear box, just a bit stumped on how to get fresh oil in to the box after draining due to the gear linkage.

How do you guys do this?

The Wiki is your friend...Taken from there,

I use 1/2" garden hose about 3ft long and a funnel it fits, pass the hose down frm the engine bay, the funnel sits on the top of the air filter and dribbles the oil in over a period of time.

Tip: Warm the oil gently first, it flows better, quicker and doesn't stink as much

I use an old 'Halls' garden sprayer, without the spray nozzle attachment. It holds about a couple of gallons (from Memory). Just put the right quantity of oil in it, put the end of the poly tube in the filler hole, pump up the air pressure, and wait for the oil to transfer.
No mess, can't overfill.

Someone managed to on mine - I drained just under 6 litres from mine when I first did mine!

they must have turned the vehicle on its side.. or filled it with the box out....

I put the hose throught he wheel arch... but you need an assistant to hold it that way... (usually on hand)

Oh and you need a GL4 rated oil, or a dual rated GL4/GL5 oil 75w90..

no, you can tie the funnel on to the rear vent while you do it.

Yeah... I suppose... always had an "assistant" on hand though, so never thought to to that...

The soft "squirty " type of tube- fitting on the screwtop closure of 500 ml. gear oil bottles fits a treat on to a 5 litre gear oil container , then fits into garden hose , tip it all up when warm and its sitting on a stool next to the rear wheel, hose over chassis and into gear box filler . Worked great for me , then like the d head i am i pulled it out whilst i was still underneath . Doh .
Btw , Si, what is " GL4 " ratied ? ?
I got some comma , 80/90 , dunno whether its gl4 .

GL5 oil is not suitable was told due to its corrosive effect on the internals of the VW gearbox.Can some one confirm this or is it not true.
