Can anyone tell me the correct set up / alignment for the alternator / water pump / /crank belts on a 1.6 TD 1989 engine. The reason I ask is that I have just had the water pump & alternator replaced as the alternator belt kept snapping even after re tensioning. The original set up was a large belt running around all three pulleys with a smaller belt running between the water and crank pulleys. However, the new set up is two smaller belts. The VW garage where the work was carried out called in a guy from an Aircooled specialist shop in Hereford who advised them that it would only work on this set up.
My concern is whether this set up will work long term. I drove from Hereford to Watford last night and all seemed fine.
Any comments / observations gratefully received

Re: Belt set up
My previous 1.6n T25 was fitted with two belts. The pulley belt fitted to the water pump&crankshaft was tensioned with shims the water pump to the alternator belt adjusted by a bracket .The 1.6td T25 i have now has only one belt which goes round the crankshaft pulley water pump & alternater and is adjusted by a bracket that moves the alternator .I have seen other T25s diesels with one belt and have no problems with breakage .Provided all the pulleys are in alignment it shouldnt be a problem for one belt.

Re: Belt set up
Our 1990 1.6 td uses the two belt system, you just need to be careful to check and adjust both belts, as previous poster said the water pump belt is adjusted by splitting the pulley and removing shims as the belt wears/stretches, remember to keep the removed shims safe you will need them when you change the belt in the future.

Just keep them on the outside of the pulley!noss vanagon wrote: remember to keep the removed shims safe you will need them when you change the belt in the future.
