inter coolers/ charge coolers

Post by hairyuk »

hi i've got a van with a aaz engine in it and was wondering about intercooling. the way i understand it is that by cooling the air after its been through the turbo charger it condenses it therefore allowing more air to be forced into the engine. my question is, isnt that the same as turning up the boost on the turbo charger and just as likely to blow the head gasket.

No popular mistake the intorcooler is to cool the air which has been heated up loads by the turbo, not to condense it as such but to cool it hense inter cooler

The intercool does cool the air as James said and by cooling the air you are actually condensing it so you are both right.
I don't know about blowing the head gasket but the T3 design does not make the installation easy.

You can get an off the shelf kit over here for about 700 yoyos.

Have a word with Tim Shettle (vw nerd) as he had to remodel inside the rear end of his V6 Alpine turbo monster, but the i/c lives (roughly) in the n/s air box. The turbo does have a shroud and electric cooling fan to help it live, mind.

Charge cooler is a more effective solution to intake cooling as it can be mounted easily in the pipework.. its more costly as it needs a rad at the front and a coolant circulation pump too... but having seen Harrymann's and PC52's charge cooler set ups.. they work a treat...

Like for like a chargecooler is said to be 4 times more efficient in cooling than a intercooler. which means you can have a much smaller chargecooler over an intercooler. Ive got a pace charge cooler from an RS turbo ford. Im trying to get it intergrated into my twin turbo scoobyvan.

Have to agree - there is a great book if you want to learn too much on the subject. I think it's called "Automotive Forced induction" by an Aussie fella with a surname like Armstrong or Alexander. It's considered to be the bible by those in the know. Money well spent. :ok
