Hi All, I am new on here, but not new to the scene. Vanfest is going to be the last shoe for my bay until she is restored! Whilst she is being restored, I am going to pursue another vee dub off my list of dubs to own! I am after a syncro wedge! I ma looking at a couple and I have noticed one I really love but it has no difflocks! Should I or can I fit these easily, or is the syncro just as good without? My father in law is a land rover nut, so I have had a lecture that its not worth it! What do you guys think? Its not like I am going up the alps, but do plan on going off road where I can. HELP!
I want a late syncro van that I can fit my own camping interior in!
In my limited experience a working Syncro with no diff locks is great in the snow, actually better than with the rear locker engaged, I'm guessing this would be the same on most slippy but firm surfaces.
A broken Syncro with no drive to the front but with rear locker engaged is remarkably capable over lumps and bumps.
I think if your going to be doing things that need a lot of wheel articulation at least a rear locker is required.
I'm not entierly sure how a landy works but I think they only have a central diff lock so are only ever really 2 wheel drive, a Syncro with both lockers engaged is pretty much true 4 wheel drive, tell your father in law to jack two of his wheels of the ground and see if he can drive off!
Diff locks can be fitted to a non diff locked syncro but it wouldn't be cheap, probably easier to keep looking for one with at least a rear locker.
Welcome
As said, Syncro section is best for ANY syncro questions... Oh and it really isnt "wedge" shaped so please dont call it a wedge
A non difflock syncro will go plenty of places, so it depends on how extreme you are going off road... Depending on what the gearbox is like on the one you are looking at, when it requires a rebuild its an opportune time to fit a difflock..
I regularly go to my local off road club events and the landy guys are always surprised at where my truck will go... yes it has its limitations...
Oh... please fill out your profile so we know where in the world you might be, you may not be far away from a syncro owner or a potential event to come and see what they can do...
It's possible to upgrade a nonlocker van to lockers, see the recent post in the syncro section by Jed the Spread.
Unfortunately finding spare locking gearboxes is becoming harder as fewer vans are getting broken for spares since CJ took his stihlsaw and plasmacutter away.
I can do it as part of a rebuild but it wouldn't be cheap, but if the van you want is really good in other ways then don't let that put you off and you may not find that you need them depending on what you do with it.
With diff locks a syncro is as capable as a 90 within the limitations of approach and departure angles and has a better turning circle and is lots more comfortable to drive and passenger in.
Come along to an event to find out for yourself.
The only problem with not having difflock(s) is this:
The Syncro without difflock will effortlessly and without any sign of slip or wheelspin go far enough up the beaten track that when the point comes where you actually do need difflocks you will be truly stuck without any prior warning and it will be a long treck back to civilisation to get help to get you out again
