Re: Driveshaft grief
Slightly off the subject but in reply to my own post about the gearbox mounting i am considering this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ENGINE-MOUNTING-R ... 286.c0.m14" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .Obtaining two off and fitting them between the mounting plate.Considering JK supply the gearbox mounting for £130 its worth a try.

Re: Driveshaft grief
Do the mesurements first
If its not wide enough you may have to use spacers or thick washers. Also tacking it to existing bracket will need gentle approach as you don't want to burn the rubber. Alsoi think central bolt hole may be on small side.

Re: Driveshaft grief
Just looking on ebay and if you search for "engine mounting" and "gearbox mounting" respectively, theres a few there, some of which I'm sure could be adapted.

Re: Driveshaft grief
Hi CovKid,
I too have the some rythmic noise you descibe from my van. It's from the drivers side and is best described as a loud clunking noise related to road speed. The noise is so loud it turns pedestrians heads.........
It's done it intermittantly since we got the van three years ago, and has been checked by the garage and everything is good condition, with no major play noted in the drive shafts. The noise seems to be sometimes triggered by going up hill.
Anyway, I thought I would write in because I'm feeling your pain
Good luck with the problem!
Cheers
Oliver

Re: Driveshaft grief
is it definatly from the axle/wheel as opposed to the gearbox?
also something that i thought whilst reading your post's
a-you say you removed the seats ect and the back sits high!! - maybe it has in the past had some heavy duty springs fitted?
b-when alot of weight was in van the noise had gone!! - it sounds to me like it is something related to this, i would consider replacing the rear springs with standard units, prehaps the drive shaft angle has something to do with it? but i would certainly replace the springs and would be juprised if it doesnt cure the problem.
i was into land rovers and off roading for a long time untill i got back into vw's by buying my t25. i have sen a fair few problems and unexplained rumblings/knockings ect from lift kits, generally the noise comes from the prop being to much of an angle and wearing the uj when the weight of the car is on it (i.e. the noise goes with no weight on it even though the prop is then at more of an angle
i know its not a landy but similar principles i would think.
hope you understand what i mean and hope it helps

Re: Driveshaft grief
I've actually settled for this reasoning myself. Springs or an unused portion of a shock or shocks that causes the clonks. Sounds exactly like a loose gearshift rod but no noise at all with weight on. Living with it for now as it would be madness to carry weight just to shut it up. MOT in two weeks so we'll see what transpires eh. Tester will see i've done a great deal of work beneath but maybe he'lll find something with his lead lamp and leverage bar. I couldn't find a damned thing myself - all looks tip top and been right through all four axles, bushes and driveshafts and mounts. Rolling road would be lovely at times like this.

Re: Driveshaft grief
Well, been gently loading up for a week away and that noise gone yet again. Weight on - no noise, weight off - noise back.

Re: Driveshaft grief
I havent read the 2nd page of coments, but that last statement is what you would get if..
1.. the cv joints were worn and then the angle of use has changed (ie jacked up suspension) so the balls are crossing the edge of the wear, onto an unused section,
or..
2... if new (as I think you said early on) the joints are actually running beyond the max angle..
In both cases you would prob get a clicking and deffo a rythmic motion for wear pattern..
I'll go have a read of page 2 now....

Re: Driveshaft grief
To give you some idea of where I'm at. This is lightly loaded on 15" wheels (195x65) - high springs eh? Now at one time it had two bench seats which aren't exactly light so maybe, just maybe it now pushes the van up higher than the CV joints are happy with. Does seem high don't you think? Could lower it a bit i guess but not keen on that route to be honest - like the ground clearance, unless i can go a bit lower and still have the capacity to carry weight if i needed. If not, will just drive around with five x 2-ton trolley jacks!
