Hi
I have 1983 1.6 diesel RHD Manual converted van which I am in the process of doingup. The gearbox works fine in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Reverse, but when 4th is selected and the clutch released it jumps out of gear, when inspected I found that the previous had attached a length of bungy cord to the base of the gear stick to hold it harder back. when selected if the gear stick is held back continiously by hand the van will happly run in 4th. Is the gearbox stuffed or is it an adjustment problem, I have not gone any further with this problem yet as Im still cutting panels off and doing alot of welding! Can offer any advice cheers

Re: Gearbox troubles !
Have you checked to see if there is owt physically stopping/preventing the run of the linkage / lever actually staying in 4th ?

Mmm.. could easily be a bent selector, but also it may be some twonk has put the shift mech back in wrong.. common item can be the plate at the gearbox that has been put on the wrong side of the mounting lugs on the box...

Re: Gearbox troubles !
if it has to be held in gear then there's a problem and holding it in gear wears the components so the problem gets worse, check the drain plug, I would expect it be thick with the remains of selector fork and synchroniser slider
