16" front brake calliper piston

Post by Yozza »

Ay up folks,
Just stripping down the front callipers as they've not been used in a long time. And of course - sods law! The dust seal was FUBAR so the Swedish salt did it's worse and corroded a small section at the outer end of the piston. I suspect I'll have to replace, does anyone know who sells the piston and seal kits? Or will I have to speak to VW Commercial? Had a quick look at Syncro Services - but no joy.

Yozza,

you'll probably be faster, and cheaper, if you contact Girling or Teves directly to get an overhaul kit. Chances are that the pistons are used in lots of different calipers and are standard bits. You could always try a specialist factor. Other than that I've no ideas. Bet you wanted to do the job today dintja - on a Bank Holiday weekend. :D

16,14 and 2wd callipers are the same. Either girling or ATE.

I have ATE calipers on the front of my 16" and bought the seal kit from the old Syncrospares but didn't use them in the end.

I'm sure it came in a VW box... I'd see which brand of caliper you have and try a VW van centre.

Thanks for all the feedback and info fellas, interesting that the same callipers are used on 2wd as well? Initailly I thought these would be from the LT family of parts?
And yes it was supposed to be a quick job, but like anything that hasn't been touched for 2 decades, it's never straight forward.
I'll try the suppliers as recommended and feedback!
