5 speed gearbox and more power needed

Have a 1.6D 4 spd van and although its perky at low speeds, it is noisy and slow on motoway. Am weighing up 1.9DG engine & 5 speed box versus 2.1 petrol. Am aware that both engines use same box but have heard that 2,1 engine exhaust is very expensive if it needs replacing? Does anyone have anymore info on which way best to go? At moment am happy doing 60mph all day long but just too noisy/strained/uncomfortable..

As its a 1.6n diesel i would consider a AAZ engine which is a 1.9td.

If you have a smelly diesel now, stick with it, get a bigger one 1.9 AAZ

2.1 exhaust cost about £500 for a SS one or about 300 for a Mild steel one

if you dont wanna go turbo then you can get the 1y, this is a 1.9 d with no turbo about 10bhp and about 20 torques more than the 1.6d,
The AAZ will be better than the 1y tho, but the 1y is virtuallt a straight swap whereas the AAZ is a bit more involved.

Am liking your advice as really want to stay with diesel. Whats best plan though when buying engine? Most adverts I see offer exchange price for 1.9d units of approx £700 but they wouldnt want my little oiler as it probably isnt very desirable and available in abundance..I would appreciate any links you folks know of to a reasonably priced aaz or 1y. Cant seem to get excited about only gaining 10 bhp though even if its easier to fit? By the way had massive disagreement with two mates yesterday who would not accept that the T25 is also known as a T3. They were saying T3 is variant but am sure they are wrong.

Also any advice on sourcing 5 speed box or am i just being stupid?

1Y engine fitted by my self cost of engine from a local breaker £250.Do a search and you could get lucky.

I bought a whole seat ibiza with a 1y in it for £275 delivered of ebay. Fitted it myself so all in cost less than £350 inc cambelt change and service.

I think the 2.1 DJ exhaust is exactly the same as the 1.9 DG, cheaper if anything because it doesn't have the air intake warmers around it.

Thanks for all your advice. Am going to keep eye out for a donor seat ibiza 1.9 d and then put it out of its misery and push it off a cliff.

if you have the time then why not put your 1.6 in the ibiza and flog it on for what you bought it for...just a thought

I wouldnt worry about going "5 speed" as its all about what ratio's are inside the box... in reality an equal 5 speed to your current box wont have taller gearing... d/TD/petrols all have an array of different ratios available
Easier to stay D than go to petrol... 1.9 non turbo the easy route.. TD harder (from a non TD base)...

regarding your arguement up the pub as far as i know your getting confused with "type 1,2,3 and t 1,2,3" the vw types are type 1= beetle, type 2 =van, type 3 =variant, notch back, square back. the type 2 comes as versions t1= splitscreen, t2= baywindow, t25 europe or t3= wedge shape or brick, t4= frontwheel drive transit style, t5= latest version. i dont know but t 1,2,3,4,5 is probably some kind of german word for mark 1,2,3,4,5

If you do fit a 1.9d then change the box for one with a higher ratio box or put some bigger tyres on the back to up the gearing.This will drop the revs down a bit
