I think I may know the answer before I type, but I am still a little uncomfortable about the current engine running.
I replaced the Aircooled engine with a New Vege engine last year, since then I have had it set up, run in and properly set up again on the rolling road at the end of last year.
This year have oil changed as usual.
The engine always gets used on long runs and is used every week. But after being left for a week it sound like a bag of "pooh"..
The old engine did this a bit, but not as badly. It takes about 10 mins of driving before she settles down, then by the time I arrive she is puffing like a kitten, right on the button.
Problem is a week later she sounds just the same. Could this be an adjustment issue, or do I just have to live with a noisy engine when left for a week.
I am using 15-40w oil

Yep, lazy/tired hydraulic lifters... apart from replacement not a lot you can do... but the cheapo replacements can have issues out of the box too...
I'd be tempted to wind the adjusters off and only apply 1/4 - 1/2 turn from just touching... (thats what I use)

OK, that makes sense.
Lets assume that the vege hydraualic lifters are not as good as the original VW ones.
I'll do another oil change shortly and adjust them up when nice and warm... must remeber to buy some new rocker gaskets first..
Cheers

Out of interest,
How do you find running twin 40 Dellortos?
Am considering these carbs for my a/c.
Hope your adjustments re hydraulic lifters work.Mine is a touch noisy for first 5miles or so especially after been standing a week.
Best Regards,

My camper had the same problem well issue shall we say, My Mechanic used some good quality engine flush and changed the oil. Its fine now, he did say it sometimes happens if you use cheaper oil too. don't know if that helps.

Sorry for the delay reply.
The Dellortos are fine on the Aircooled engine, it makes a big difference when you are going uphill and I find I can trail on a light throttle on the Mway.
If you put your foot down hard it does shift fuel, otherwise it is much the same as before on a run at 60 ish.
Around town it is just as shocking as with the orig carbs
The recon engine felt a bit tight to start with, but definately freeing up now.

Re: Aircooled - Vege recon engine noisy - tappets?
Thanks,
Did you have any fitting issues with them?
Do they have cold start chokes or is it just a case of pumping throttle a few times and having lumpy idle when cold?
Air filter provision.Did you use standard air box or individual flat pancake air filters?
Any clearance issues to engine cover?
Blimey, sorry so many questions so little time!
Sorry gone a bit off topic here!

Re: Aircooled - Vege recon engine noisy - tappets?
You need to buy the Short manifolds, which are available, Jason on the forum had a few suggestions on where to buy them, but people such as LA performace will help you out.
I bought the slim pancakes which fit under the engine hatch with no mods.
No chokes, just a few pumps, I use my van all year and it starts fine (if a little noisy if I leave her a week)
If you check back on my posts there is some threads about sorting the dells.
Drop me a pm and I will email you a pic of the engine bay if you like
