New 1.9 petrol engine for T25

Post by Birgittej »

Hi there

Can anyone recommend a good replacement engine for a petrol 1.9 T25. Coming back from France our van broke down :( . It is now on it's way back to the UK but the garage thinks it could be a major problem and may need a new engine. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks
Birgitte

Hi happy T25 owners

Seems the summer is taking a toll on a few of us. After a lovely trip to Cornwall my T25 (air cooled 2 litre) engine also decided it has seen the light of day. After being towed to our local garage and a few compression tests latter i have been told that the a couple of the pistons are shot with oil leaking everywhere.

So i have started the long traul for an alternative. At the moment all i can find is either an elite or vege recon engine the latter costing about four hundred more. After searching several forums opinion seems to be mixed about these engines so not sure what to do next. Are their any other alternatives at a resonable cost. I was going to get elite to pick it up and fit it but worried that their engines might not be up to much especially as they are over a hundred miles away. Any experience people have had would be really appreciated. I would prefer to get a local mechanic to fit it and have been quoted 350, does that seem reasonable and should i have a new clutch fitted while they have got the engine out. Be great if their was a way for a vote on alternative engine choices

Long live the T25

For those looking to replace a flat 4 engine, Elite are really the ones most of us reckon are the best :)

After my experiences early this year and the advise of those "who REALLY know" (Simon Baxter of Brickwerks and Steve of Gasure for example) it is folly to buy a used engine unless you can see it running and can take a VW flat 4 engine EXPERT with you too !!

Re-building them is usually not a good option either.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

I got my engine from elite and whilst it runs ok they are taking ages to provide an invoice and return the 150 quid surcharge,
it has been 4 months now and even after 10 calls still no cheque.
