Trouble Selecting Gears When Hot

Post by mirams »

Hello,

I've had trouble getting into gear when the van is hot (sitting in traffic on a hot day, that sort of thing). It is as if the clutch is not disengaging fully, which implies the slave cylinder isn't pushing enough, as there is no adjustment as far as I know?

It is a new slave cylinder and I have bled it a couple of times. Any ideas? I doubt it is the master cylinder since this won't be getting hot?

My gear shifts work great when it been raining but put that down to wear/lack of lube on shift mechanism. Can be stiff if weather or vehicle hot. May be unrelated though.

Could be spigot bearing, they seem to be worse when hot

I hadn't thought of the spigot bearing. Is there any way to test that theory (without taking the gearbox off!)? Or at least to eliminate a problem with the hydraulics?

I should mention it was a new clutch, release bearing, release arm 18 months ago.

Naa, I'll buy into some of that ... mine used to a bugger when hot. I think it was because when the van was waxoyled they got a load of it on the selector shaft so on hot days and with the friction of changing gear the waxoyl got a bit sitcky going through the holes on the underside of the van near the spare wheel. The solution was to use white spirit to clean off the waxoyl from the shaft by these holes and then Hien Gericke motorcycle chain oil to lub it, being chain oil it won't just drip off. Nay problem since! 8)

I've tried changing the gearbox oil - no effect!

Doesn't seem like the linkage, I've greased all of the joints, under the stick, and it is quite slick when it is cold.

If you drop the spare wheel, crawl up where it was and look towards rear ov vehicle. Above the fuel tank you will see a bush where the gear linkage rod passes through some metalwork. Give this a good spray with wd40 using the straw to aim oil and this should clean it. Then spray with chain oil as mentioned above.
May just help.
