ok, firstly, we really need to know what year and engine.
secondly, just above half way isnt hot, its about normal, nothing to worry about.
if the water was laying below the center of the back, just under the silencer, it could possibly be out of the vents in the top up tank, which happens if the top up tank is over full, and more coolant is pushed into it......
ok, atleast its not one of those awfull diesel ones!
there are two tanks for the cooling sys, one behind the numberplate flap, which is known as the "top up tank" and the other which you need to remove the engine hatch lid to get to, known as the "header tank".
the header tanks should be full to the brim when the engine is cold, do NOT check when its hot!
the top up tank should be full to the max mark (Its almost impossible to over fill it , the coolant runs out of the filler when its full enough) - however, if the pressure cap on the header tanks isnt working correctly, it over fills it but wont "suck" it back as it should, and venting happens...
when all is well, when the engine get up to temp, the coolant expands and is pushed out of the pressure cap on the header tank into the top up tank, and then whence the engine is cooling after use, the coolant contracts and the coolant is sucked back into the header tank from the top up tank, maintaining the level
cheers steve for your help
is the temp gauge connected to header tank
and maybe pressure cap broken
thats whats causing problem
and can you buy new pressure cap or do you have to by new bottle
didnt even go into the temp gauge, sorry......
if it is the blue screw on cap - known on here as a "darlek"
take the cap off, and you (or someone else if you can find a vonenteer) blow and suck down the spout, you should be able to blow, but not suck
if it is in doubt brickwerks sell them, dont bother with the jk or gsf cheapo one
if ( and i seroiusly doubt it) is a old syle "baynet" metal proper radiatior cap looking one , buy a new one!
as for the temp guage, you need to check the connections, ( the plug on the top of the header tank is for the flashing red light to alert of low coolant level) at the thermostat housing first, but it maybe the sender faulty
