help with fittng my power steering

Post by joe75 »

hello,

Today I have been retro fitting power steering to LHD Syncro Westy - 1.6TD. I gathered all the parts over the last few months and thought i would give it a go. After a few hrs i have the pump, reservoir and rack in place. Tomorrow I am hoping to fit the pipes. I bought new flexi pipes as the old ones were rusty.

I have a few questions that maybe someone can help me with?

On the power steering rack which way round do the pipes go? Whats high pressure from the pump and whats the low pressure return?

Same question goes for the pump. One outlet is a high pressure to the rack at the front and one is for the feed from the reservoir, but which is which?

Same again for the reservoir. Which way do the pipes go around?

I bought a drive belt from GSF and its to big does anyone know the size or part number of the correct belt?

How much fluid should the system take?

Any help or pointers would be great ... :ok

Thanks in advance.

High pressure from the pump goes to the connector on the rack nearest to the front of the van. Low pressure is the one from the reservoir or the return and that goes from the rack connector nearest the rear of the van on the rack to the reservoir.

without crawling under van to check I'm pretty sure that the fittings are sized so they can only fit one way, the low pressure line is the bottom one where they run one above each other along the chassis I know that,
Fluid it's less than the 1.5 litre container that comma stuff comes in, IIRC it's about 0.8litres
correct belt is 023 903 137 A ,10x1075
the procedure in bentley expalins filling process it's dead easy and works and also the pics may identify the hoses as to which is which.
you need bentley for a syncro

Thanks for the replies guys

I have a bentley manual but it does not cover syncro's and has nothing on power steering! I am guessing i need to get another one, the correct one :idea

The drive belt GSF sent me is a 10A0800C. Is the 10x1075 suggested even bigger?

With your help I think i have worked out the pipe work. I am off now to see if I am right?

Thanks again :ok

Today went well. It all works fine and changes the van so much. If anyone is thinking of fitting power steering then do it. My wife drove the Syncro for the first time today in months, even five months pregnant she can turn the wheel when parked with one hand :rollin

Thanks again for all your help.

Roll on next weeks trip to the south of France :ok
