we've been advised that we need a new exhaust by the garage that did our MOT. Unfortunately they can't do the work so I have booked it in with another garage and explained what needs doing over the phone.
I know it seems like a simple question but I want to make sure I order everything I need, as we are due to go away in the van for a week only 3 days after its booked in, and I really don't want any hold ups messing up my holiday.
is it definately the silencer thats had it? cos its usually the twin pipes from the heat exchangers that rot through and if thats the case you can triple the price and cross everything that the studs into the cylinder heads don't snap when they try to undo them.
modern garage mechanics tend to use impact wrenches to undo things and that a sure fire way to bust the studs.
check with the peeps who told you its knacked to see exactly which parts have had it.

I have the same connections as you and opted to do that instead. The advantage is that the cost is lower and it should last longer than a stock one (if header is painted) as well as being easier to work on at a later date. Haven't sourced a silencer box yet but ideal would seem to be one off a honda mototcycle - around £40 ish - just need to verify distance between holes on the three bolt silencer fitting.

thanks for the advice, i'll get back onto the garage. I've already ordered the exhaust kit from VW heritage, and it has arrived.
We were told by Manchester air cooled last year we need a new exhaust and to book in in during the winter when he was quieter. We hung on til this spring and booked it in for the work, when the mechanic changed his mind and said "why have you booked it in for a new exhaust?" Uurrr, because you told me to!
Then it failed its MOT a few weeks back and we ended up have a few other jobs done (not at MAC) and the new mechanic said too much oxygen in the exhaust, it needs fiddling round with and by the look of things it may well fall apart and not be able to get put back on. And the next thing he said was, I'm the MOT tester and my boss won't let me do the work on the exhaust, you'll have to find somewhere else to do it. So at least I know he wasn't trying it on to get extra work.
So basically, I've booked it in somewhere else, with someone who is happy to work on aircooleds and does rally work so is used to non standard kit and mods. Rozzo you have got me worried now. I will have to ring up the garage again and find out more. Oh bliddy hell. He definately didn't mention heat exchangers or twin pipes to me, but may well have done to my other half.
Right, I've spoken to the mechanic and he says there is an air leak where the exhaust manifolds join the engine cylinder heads. This means nothing to me, and not sure what to do next. I know it sounds bad as he was talking about stripping down entire exhaust system to get to the problem.

Shouldn't be too bad. Few new gaskets maybe.

The heat exchangers are sealed to the cylinder heads by four gaskets, two per heat exchanger (note: the gaskets for cylinders 1 and 3 are different to the gaskets for cylinders 2 and 4).

There's a lot of other watercooled stuff that's either no longer available or very expensive (eg. engines !).
