I'm in the market for a new one as well - finally found out what the clonking was!!
Haven't found a cheaper source yet, mind you haven't looked very hard.

Re: Gearbox mount
Its not the most complicated thing either. Heres a story that might just give some light at the end of the tunnel.
Around 15 years ago I put a beetle through an MOT and it failed on 'rear anti-roll bar'. Now as any knowledgable bug owner will tell you, beetles don't have a rear anti-roll bar. Its actually a stabiliser for when you're towing and was only fitted to late or 'luxury' bugs. I simply removed it, but man at MOT says no. Its fitted so must work - can't remove. At the time you couldn't get the rubber bushes for these things so I spent TWO days carving them out of a similar rubber and fitted it and it passed. It must surely not be beyond the realms of possibility to do a similar thing with these mounts. Not exactly carving them but finding a similarly sized bush to replace it with?
There is not a cat in hells chance I'd pay £120 for that farty thing. I'd make it - end of.
As an aside, if the clonking on mine turns out to be that, thats exactly what I'll do. I'm surrounded my machinists, welders and motor factors...
Again I think theres a crying need on here for a new topic section entitled "substitute items for obsolete parts".

Just a thought. Would imagine that its not rocket science to cut and machine this material.

Re: Gearbox mount
Going the diy route I have found http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TRANSMISSION-MOUN ... 286.c0.m14these that may be a suitable replacement with a bit of grinding and welding - I will have to measure mine up and get the dimensions for the ebay one. The price is attractive!
None of the manufacturers sites appear to have anything remotely like what we need.

Re: Gearbox mount
You could be right chap although during the welding it could damage the rubber - heatsink might help. Has to be something around that would be close enough. It seems an extraordinary amount of money for what it is. Having owned v-dubs for many many years, now and again you encounter a part that is clearly over-priced either because theres only one manufacturer and few sold or someone just inflating the price. For the same amount of money you could buy a couple of wing mirrors, plugs and leads...

Re: Gearbox mount
Must be a few of us with a resourceful approach to finding such solutions. Quite amazing. A new breed of VW owner - the skip-ferret
I think we may have nailed this one. The saving could be enormous.

Re: Gearbox mount
Well this is my gearbox mount (currently). Seems to be no evidence of play although evidence of vintage status:
