Temp light flashing

Please help

Hi guys. I have a problem i think.
after not using my van for 1 or 2 months i went out in it yesterday and after 10mins (6miles) noticed my temp light was flashing rapidly yet the temp guage was only half way
so i quickly turned round and went to the garage a few hundred yards away but, I found there was plenty of water in it but the oil was low so i bought a litre of oil and chucked it in.
this seemed to sort the problem and i drove a further 10 to 15 miles before reaching home all good.
However, went out in it this morning again and i only got round the corner when i noticed it was flashing again so i took it back home and parked it up and used the car.

As i have not had a problem with it until now and have not used it for a while i am a little gutted/confused and would like to know if anyone knows what the problem is that's causing this to happen?

is the water header tank ( the one under the removable floor panel ) full to the brim when the engine is stone cold ? if not then fill it to the brim with coolant and see how she goes, also check the contacts on the sender unit as they may need a clean, if the coolant level is fine and she's not overheating on the gauge then it may just be old age creeping in.

Cheers for that buddy, i'll check it out. bit confused about removable floor panel, i'm assuming that means the engine bay lid? so it would be the expansion bottle on the far right?? also where will i find the temp sender unit please???

Yes matey the engine bay lid opposed to the pull down flap behind the numberplate i'm sure that the flashing light actually indicates low coolant as opposed to an overheating issue .

if the gauge wasnt in the red at the hot end and the light flashes its low coolant, if the gauge is in the eversohot and its flashing its over temp and/ or low coolant.

if the coolant is to the brim in the header tank, and it wasnt hot, its almost defoo corrosion if it didnt do it last time you used it.

just had a look in the expansion bottle and theres loads of water in there almost right to the top. But it's pretty dirty to be honest, and theres a lot of dark grey sludge around the very edge where the top was removed from
Is this a bad thing?
I know the other water bottle had mucky water in when i bought it. but theres never been a problem with the van before.
I also noticed the return pipe was twisted at the point where it attaches to the lid of the expansion bottle too.

any thoughts?

As Mocki ponted out, the led warns if the coolant temp is high or if the coolant level is low. If it continues to play up then remove the control module marked 43 located in the fuse box. If the led continues to flash then you have a coolant temperature problem, if it stops flashing then the problem is either low coolant or a wiring problem.
