Engine removal help!

Hi all

does anyone fancy helping me remove a 1.9l watercooled engine? It's in my write off camper, it's only about two months old! Was fitted 2300 miles ago by Peter Norris in Clapham near me. The van is now in Dorset at my Mums house after it was hit by a drunk driver and the insurance wrote it off.

It seems fine but the exhaust was damaged in the smash and it hasn't been run since then. I've heard they are easy to swap and I'd hate to see it go as it ran sooo sweet. I have a 1.9l wasseboxer caravelle that I'd like to either swap engines with or keep one for a spare.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated

Are you after someone in London or Dorset?

I'm no expert engine remover but have read a few posts on here and seems fairly straight forward. I've got tools and jacks etc.

If you've no rush to get it done I'm available in London in a fews weeks' time.

The van is in Dorset at the moment as I had to get it off the road. So I need to do the work down there.
Are they heavy? I'm concerned about damaging it or the van as it comes out!

Its dooable on your own. You really want a couple of big chunky lumps of wood to lower it on to or you won't get the jack out, but its not so bad once you get stuck in.

Excuse my obvious questions Covkid, so I need to drop the engine out rather than lift it out?
Is there enough clearance underneath to get it out?

Yep. Once lowered to the ground, jack one corner of the vehicle and pull it out from underneath.

Not done one in ages but think you'll need to support the gearbox. The engine is only held in with four bolts - plus the engine support bracket.

To be honest, getting them out is easy compared to putting them back in.

jack the van up about 10inches at the back, sit it on axle stands, undo all the pipes and wires,(remember the throttle cable and the alternator wires) undo the driveshafts from the gearbox, undo the gear linkages off the gearbox, take the clutch slave off the gearbox or the pipe off the slave and lower both the engine and box out in one lump( you want to keep the box too!) should be able to have it out in less than 2 hours on your own.

if you want to store it seperately from the gearbox, make sure you dont let the gearbox input shaft sit on the seal , store it bellhousing downwards on a couple of lumps of 4x2 wood to stop the input shaft touching the floor

Thanks to everyone for your help and advice.

But unfortunately due to lack of time and finances, we have decided to let the van go with the engine still in.
It is up for sale in the vehicles for sale forum on here.
