I have a strange whining noise when driving which sounds like its coming from the gearbox, the sound is high pitched and sounds like a straight cut box on a mini. any suggestions?

Re: Gearbox Whine
Rather than driving it up the road, I'd be jacking up any one of the rear wheels to carry out a static test. You will then be able to identify which end of the box the noise is coming from.

Re: Gearbox Whine
Does it go away when you take your foot off the power?
Have you checked oil level/changed oil lately?

Re: Gearbox Whine
does it do it in neutral with the clutch out but not with the clutch in ?..could be the clutch release bearing

the word 'pissing' is safe

Re: Gearbox Whine
input side if it goes away with clutch depressed and vehicle moving, so that's either clutch release bearing, spigot bearing, input bearing, mainshaft bearing, 3rd, 4th and reverse idler which is actually on the input shaft on Aircooled.
If it just takes a slight dab of clutch pedal to stop it I'd suggest that it was release bearing.
And I'd do an oil change if you don't know the state of the box

Re: Gearbox Whine
do an oil change rich and see what joys are stuck to the bung when you get it out.
then turn the stereo up

i had a similar problem many years ago with a 2.0l mk4 cortina. it developed a whine and lots of strange noises ensued. i was skint at the time so just had to nurse it and see how it developed. then one day me dad said "have you checked the rubber gaitor around the gearstick" i did and it had split, allowing me to clearly hear all the normal clicks and whirrings that couldn't usually be heard inside the car. changed the rubber boot and it was silent again

Re: Gearbox Whine
hiya folks, i have a whine on a bmw 320i, i think it's coming from the left axle, could be a bearing, but could it be the diff, does the diff oil run through the axles to the ends of them near the bearings? how could i diagnose this? cheers.

Re: Gearbox Whine........Update
drained the oil and was expecting the firtree as per wikibut there are a few larger bits on it

now do I refill with oil and see how it goes or put the spare box on (unknown condition) and see how that one is?

Re: Gearbox Whine........Update picture
imho that wants a rebuild, see what the unknown box plug looks like, but really only way to tell is to drive it
try http://www.bearsmotorsport.co.uk/Volksw ... ge-VW.aspx for Aircooled as I don't do them, I have heard good reports of them and they aren't far from you I guess
