Hi all, does the mark 1 golf head lamp have the same dimensions as my 1982 tin top head lamp as mine fell out at the weekend on exmoor and the golf ones are a lot cheaper on ebay ?

AFAIK they are not the same and there is some fiddling required to make them fit. Have you tried Just Kampers for new lamps? That's where I bought two new RHD ones for my LHD two years ago and found the price very reasonable.
