rear wiper motor alternatives.

Post by wasserleaker »

Just wondered if anyone knows of an alternative vehicle that has the same wiper motor as a T25's rear one? mine has burnt out due to a very stiff, almost seized pivot bush, stripped, freed and re-greased now, and pivotting nicely. sure the same motor must have been fitted to other vehicles that can be found at the scrappers... any ideas? :)

Not an answer as such but I faced the same dillema, gave up and removed the lot. I have never ever had a need to wipe the back screen in two years other than the usual wash and wax. If I had a syncro and was doing a lot of offroading then maybe it would be more useful but the back window doesn't get that dirty in my opinion. Better actually, to buy a bottle of Rain-X and give the rear screen a coat of that. I'm not alone in thinking the rear wiper is superfluous and as a VW 'extra' was more a selling angle than anything approaching usefullness.

The other 'useless' fitting on the outside is the "floppy ear" wing mirrors - totally inadequate for the job they were commanded to do. VW vans, with wing mirrors made in Taiwan - thats what they feel like to me. Why VW didn't fit a better mirror as standard escapes me - all that engineering and they go and fit those crappy things....

T3 motor is T3 specific part, probably due to the casting for the mount, the motor bit probably same as a lot of late 80s german cars/vans
I've a spare untested one, I'll try giving it some power and see if it works

Agree about the wing mirrors -- but it's when we have several mountain bikes on't back that we need to clear the rear window a bit , at least partly to see if they're still there .........
wasserleaker , what is the pivot brush ? would that cause mine (recently retrofitted ) to go slow and warm up the elec supply cable a bit ? Should i strip the motor ?

May be useful may be not but if the brushes in that motor have gone and you can't find any, go to a lawnmower shop! I know this cos I had a beetle wiper motor fail prior to an MOT and VW wanted £80 for a new one. Took the remanants of the old brushes to a lawnmower shop and guy found me a pair that were close but slightly too thick. Sanded them down and hey presto - job done for 15p!

Thanks for the replies... Covkid, see what you're saying, mate, but as it has one fitted, i'd like to keep it and get it working again,
Jaylo.... the spindle with the M6 nut on it that the arm pivots on has a bush/tube which it turns back and forth in, on mine it was very stiff to turn and no doubt finished off the motor, you can strip it down and remove any corrosion and regrease it,, remove whole assembly, take off little circlip washers and 'o' ring and tap the spindle out of the pressed steel housing, clean up and regrease, if its slow in operating and the motor gets warm it may be in need of attention, eventually the fuse will blow if left.
Aidan, thanks for the info, may be calling you about that motor :)
