clutches and brakes

Post by ermie571 »

Hi chaps and chappesses,

ok, we changed the clutch over the weekend, as had dreadful burning smell and lots of revs and little forward motion.
When we took the old clutch off, several of the bolts were very loose (we are talking finger tight here...loose!)

So new clutch in place, and system bled (well, the clutch was working ok, and still is with no dragging)

But, just driven to parents house (120 miles) and I am sure I can catch a whiff of the burning clutch smell.....nowhere near as bad as before....is this just the remnants of the last clutch?

Also, and this is the bad bit....there is sommat wrong with the brakes. The first push you get little or nothing, but lift and press again and the brakes are fine. What the blithering heck is wrong with it NOW!!! Have we got to bleed the brakes as well?

Advice, as usual, gratefully received!

Gotta get this sorted...got an 80-90 express on board!

Hi Em!

Right... A test for the clutch... Pull handbrake on hard, Start engine, Engage top gear, rev engine fairly hard/fast and bring clutch pedal up. If the engine stalls then the clutch should be ok.If your foot is off the clutch pedal and the engine is still revving, there could be a problem!
Would have thought it was just the old burnt smell wafting around a bit though.

As for the brakes... I have no idea! Check the brake fluid top up tank again with the lid off to get a good look. Although when we left it it was full! Seems a bit strange to me but a quick bleed of the brakes should sort it.
Mark.

Ta Mark - sure the clutch is ok - John was driving her and says that the clutch feels fine and is also pulling well....but will try that tomorrow sometime. Its amazing how different the biting point is.

Will find a motor factors and try bleeding the brakes.

Just be cautious Em... The last thing you want to do is twist your nipples off while you're on your jollies!
