Juddering between gear changes - on holiday now

Hi all,

away in Dorset this week and having trouble with a juddering engine between gears, I guess at about 2.5k revs. It does pull out of it once the engine reaches a certain rev range. The idle speed is fine and no ht leads seem to have dislodged.

I drive a 2l 1980 Aircooled petrol van, twin carb.

It's tricky to search for tips as only using the mobile to post so any advice apreciated as ever.

Sorry can't help ya, but if your near Wareham, get yourself to KombiKlassics. You can see it from the flyover near railway station....Great bloke helped me out last week when I was down that way

Could be a contaminated clutch... oil from the gearbox can do this

get under the van and try rocking the engine ,could be that one of the mounts has failed

where are you in dorest ?

Thanks for the replies, we are heading back to site now in swanage.

It feels like a power issue, rather than the clutch sliping or the engine mounts being knackered, hmm, will investigate further.... Thanks again

Sounds like the carbs aren't balanced. Make sure they are both opening at the same time and the same amount.

yep, eather the carbs are out of balanced or there could be a blocked jet... hence your low down rev problems..
Also possibles could be a old fuel filter.... worth checking... and only a few quid for a new one..

Hello again all,

Well, the problem has completely gone.

We got to a new site over in Christchurch and whilst setting up I spotted a flat ( in progress) on the nearside rear wheel... So I changed the wheel to the spare and inspected the dead tyre - it must have been faulty (Michelin) as it had warped slightly and the wire reinforcing was beginning to protrude! The tyre had a good tread on it and no uneven wearing although it did look older than the others - I haven't changed the tyres for the year that I've owned this van (anyone recommend a good set please?)

Now I can't really put my finger on why this defective tyre would have caused the juddering in mid range revs but I do know that the van instantly ran correctly after I changed the wheel... spooky.

Perhaps someone can offer an explanation? My van does have tendencies to 'do what the f*ck it fancies' so I'm not overly surprised, just happy to have smooth motoring again, in fact we rolled home at 70 most of the way and was feeling really solid

not that weird really as tyres have a shelf life of around 5 to 6 years from the date of manufacture.and a lot of folks are running around on out of date ones.its a good idea to check the age of your tyres.

im no expert on tyres.but your local tyre dealer should be able to sort you some decent ones..
