Exhaust temperatures

Post by slobbo »

The VR6 generates a fair bit of heat and the exhaust sits underneath providing even more heat so Jean Louis Brion has made up some heat shields which sit just above the exhaust. The problem is that the heat shields over time with heat and vibration have become loose with the welds holding the brackets in place cracking. This has now left me with rattling heat shields. It doesn't do ones street cred any good with a deep growl accompanied by a rattling exhaust so I have thought about removing the heat shields and applying some more exhaust wrap (there is some already on the exhaust manifold). Will this do the same job? Is it going to be as effective?
Cheers
Rob.

Id be inclined to make the heat shields properly as there is no reason why they should break up - unless of course you damaged them along the way

No the shields are ok 2 of the mounts have come away where they have been welded to the exhaust. Don't know how I can reattach without the same happening again.

Can't remember where I read this, but Jean Louis Brion was apparently thinking of running some sort of South African exhaust to better get rid of the heat - actually I can remember, it was in the magazine article about the van. I think ... can't find my copy.

Yeah it is in the article but the longer exhaust is to improve the midrange. I want to do that but it isn't a cheap option.

Ah! Hope you get it all sorted. We had a great trip to Wales, but the van is now at the garage getting the suspension sorted :?

You do realise Ben that the van has poly bushes on the front hence you will get a squeak off them. At least I was told it had poly bushes on it.
