Rear main oil seal 1.6TD 1989 JX

Post by wilkesma »

Quick bit of advice needed before mechanic rings back!

Early last year I had a complete engine overhaul, new clutch etc. Had a few teething problems at the time (to say the least!).

Now I'm being told (by the same mechanic) that the rear main oil seal is what's causing the oil leak that's been bugging me for months - Should they have changed this when completing the engine refurb? Should I be expecting to pay a bill for god knows how many hours labour to change the seal?

Need to get my demands right before agreeing to anything!

Cheers

If they stipped engine dowm, they should have fitted a new one anyway. DEpends what you call refurb...

They're saying they did replace the seal but apparently "these engine's are prone to it becuase they don't create a vacuum in the crankcase so are always under pressure". It was less than 18 months and under 8,000 miles ago that it was supposedly replaced - surely not every owner of one of these has to have the engine out on an annual basis!? They had to replace the crankshaft last March after just a few hundred miles on the refurbed engine - it shattered whilst doing 70 on the M5! I just wonder whether the job was never quite right and this is putting extra stress on the seal??

I've left the receipt from the engine refurb in the van and can't get to it at the moment but when I do I'll list the jobs that were done at the time.
