Inverter , 240v hook up, LB question

Post by brandygangster »

Hi Guys

Im Neil and new to the forum, 1st post. I have brought myself a 1985 t25 converted camper and have a couple of query about electrics.

Currently it has a leisure battery fitted on a split charge relay, im going to refit inside and am looking at fitting 240v sockets in a couple of places running on an inverter from the leisure battery when not near hookup, i also want to put in a 240v hookup in to charge leisure battery

The sockets running off the inverter, can them same sockets be powered direct from the 240v hookup once connected instead of running off inverter (bypassing?), or do I have to run the inverter all the time even when connected to 240v hookup and just charge the leisure battery, and addition socket that only work when on hookup.

What kind of setup would you guys recommend, im a little confused at present.

Here are the options:-

1. Buy an extension lead and plug it into your invertor. Usde that for powering any 240V appliances and leave the fixed mains sockets for EHU only.

2. Make a cable with a hook-up plug one end and a 13A plug on the other end (or buy a 13A mains adaptor for your hook up lead) and feed your invertor output into the hook up point and then use the 13A sockets. YOu will need to run the cable through a window or opening of some sort.

3. Buy a changeover mains switching unit and select which source you want to run the mains sockets from, complicated but can be done if you are able to do the wiring and do it safely.

There are 240v inverter/charger combis available. I've seen some with auto-switchover when connected to the mains as well. Look at what chandlers have to offer. They are more than £50 though..
