Tappets

Post by Tug »

Hi,

Recently adjusted all my tappets as it says in the Haynes....However heard that their info is incorrect. Someone else told me to set them as follows :

Turn adjust screw until it just touches the top of the valve and then turn it two and half times again. Ok ...But in my oppinion this is a little tight...and it will start missing again.

The bus runs good but their is a rattle from a couple of them still.....Do I leave it or try again.....

Any ideas Please.

Bus is a CU 2.0 Aircooled..
Life is not a rehearsal...Live life to the max....Buy a Aircooled VW and get covered in Rust and Oil.......But we all love it really....!!

It varies from one thread to another... But generally one and a half turns is said to be about right.

Don't know what there like but I know when I heard my first car, a beautiful mk3 fiesta... the general consensus was that they were noisy because an indention use to wear into the tappets. Obviously when using a feeler gauge to measure the gap this cannot be accounted for. I don't know if it is the same on T25s but it could be where the advice to wind down a little more after adjustment has come from.

Don't know if this helps alot but its just my 2p.

2.5 turns in is far to much... and realistically they never need checking unless its been apart or parts are worn to hell...
I use 1/2 turn (half) and that works for me over lots of thousands of miles....
Correct oil also helps (15w40 mineral or if tired a 20w50) as does not using it for short journeys...
