Having driven approx 1100 miles from Santander to St.Malo over a period of nearly three weeks, upon my final drive to Gloucester, had a bit of trouble 12 miles from home on Wednesday and ended up being recovered on a flat bed.??
1.9 AAZ td camper.
Lost power and began to smoke big time, engine cut out.
Having had a quick look last night--- The " teeth" of the cam belt ( only 2k miles and 1 year old ) have stripped off ???
Took cam cover off and the cam " buckets " are jammed down and NOT touching the cam. Cam will turn but then seizes.
I am assuming that valves have hit pistons, bent, broken etc ?? I assume the pistons, block is also likely to be scrap but will take head off anyway for a look .
Any ideas what could have caused the teeth to strip off ???
Anybody got a replacement engine up for grabs ??
Maybe its time for me to consider alternatives, such as a subaru engine. I can do all of the mechanical stuff but would need guidance on the wiring aspects. What sort of price would I be looking at for the engine and conversion parts ??
cheers

Think I will stick with a VAG diesel unit.
Now considering a TDi unit.
Has anybody on here done this, just how difficult is the electrical aspect ?
I like the idea of a 130/150 bhp unit with the economy of a TDi--what are the pitfalls ?
A local resto company has just put a TDi unit in a splitty but would not commit themeselves to the cost/difficulty of the wiring.
cheers
