Fuel filter 1989 1.6TD (JX)

Never changed a fuel filter before! The 'pocket mechanic' manual I've got shows a different filter to the one on my van. For illustration see the manual diagram (http://www.twitpic.com/d0k0n) and a picture of my filter (http://www.twitpic.com/d0jth). The difference is that there's no bleed screw on mine and two additional pipes attached via a clip.

Am I OK to just remove all four pipes and refit them onto the new filter? Or do I need to worry about air getting into the fuel system?

Your help would be very much appreciated.

The filter that is ilustrated in the Pocket Mechanic was fitted in and upto Year 1987- I know this much as I converted my van from Air-cold to water then fitted a complete wiring loom and all associated gubbins from an 1987 M.O.T. failure 1.6TD, The fuel filter in the Manual is what I have got in engine bay its a screw on canister with 1 inlet and 1 outlet pipes with banjo bolt fitments, Quite a few gurus on here say its the better type with the air bleed screw,
The filter fitted on yours is the later type I bought one from JK and found it was different also it came with a plastic push on fit pipe assembly. you have three pipes (1) inlet and 2 outlet 1 is fuel delivery and other (I assume is for the air bleed, I am only guessing with this setup) it is only when you change the filter, that air is present its to aid the fuel filling up in the filter body, I would try and fill the filter with diesel before you fit the pipes.
And as a precaution only I would insulate those two live pade connectors which I think is going to your Auxillary water pump.

hi, iv got the same filter on mine,same engine etc, is it normal to see some air-bubbles in the fuel line when the engine is running or does it need bleeding? ta leroi :)

in theory it should be self bleeding although to help it along crack the top of the injectors until you see neat fuel ( when vehicle is running) after that it should be fine.
You can say alot of of things with "ar"

Thanks for the helpful replies.

Let me get things right, when fitting the new filter I need to attach the fuel inlet pipe and the plastic clip on arrangement, then run the engine until fuel spills from the filter outlet. At which point I push the outlet pipe on before cutting the engine again. Does that sound right? Am I best to "crack" an injector as a final precaution as well?
